FAQ
About Moja
-
On a school trip to Tanzania, we played a game of soccer with some local kids. As the game ended and everyone got changed not all the kids were wearing underwear. Asking questions about this was the start of a bigger conversation about the challenge of being able to afford underwear and sanitary products. It’s something that’s especially challenging for people affected by poverty and even moreso, children.
Then Moja was founded, an underwear company that funds access to underwear and sanitary products for children. But realising the downfalls of a one-for-one model, we decided to establish local underwear production and an education program in Tanzania. This all happens through our non-profit organisation, Moja Foundation.
It didn’t make sense to help some people at the expense of others. So we also put a lot of thought into how we produce the underwear sold on our webshop. We happily share how our underwear is made, from sourcing through to sewing and what we’d like to improve in the future. -
We truly believe that we can turn consumer power into a force for good, creating incredible impact.
We want to have distributed 1 million pairs of underwear and sanitary pads alongside education by 2025. That goal is what gets us out of bed every morning, advancing hygiene and health inequities all over the world. The way for us to do that is by sharing the Moja story and selling beautiful underwear.
-
Moja underwear is currently only available online. We will keep you posted when we expand to stores. For now we stick to home deliveries.

Together with our partners we are continuously working on our products to improve the quality and have a more sustainable product.
We ensure that our products have a high quality by working with Samofil in Portugal. Samofil has years of experience with making underwear. The whole process from raw cotton to underwear is Samofil’s business. To make sure we know how they work we visited the factory in the beginning of 2020 during this trip we worked together with them on our awesome products, we were able to get to know the family and see all the facilities with our own eyes.
-
Moja believes in equal opportunities for everybody. We set up Moja Foundation to help us work towards just that. Creating equal opportunities also includes the people that work hard to make our products. We care about people, the environment in which they work and in which they live. More information about sustainability at Moja can be found here.

We produce with family company Samofil in Portugal. They have years of experience that makes them able to process raw cotton and make it into underwear for you to wear. Because they are located in Europe it is a lot easier for us to visit. Together we work towards making the fashion industry more sustainable for people and the planet.
-
Our underwear is made with 95% cotton that is grown in Turkey. We chose cotton because it is breathable, natural and healthy.
If we sell enough pairs of underwear this year, we hope to make the switch to organic cotton in 2021. That way our underwear would become more planet friendly. The other 5% in our underwear is elastane. Elastane is needed to hold the shape and for the stretch in underwear. Otherwise you won’t be able to get a pair over your bum. We have not found any solid and affordable technology for replacing elastane with a more natural material, but we will keep our eyes open for options.
-
The cotton in Moja underwear is grown in Turkey. While there is still a lot that we need to learn about the conditions there we wanted to share this with you and let you know that we are working on it!
-
Did you know that patterned fabric needs more water and energy to produce than single colored items? We didn’t know either at first, but when we discovered this we realised that for us comfort is more important than patterns. In the end comfort is what you feel throughout the day, right? That is why our products are single colored, comfortable items with a timeless design.

We believe that everybody should have equal opportunities.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case, which is especially evident concerning health and hygiene. That is why we are working on education projects to make sure people get more knowledge about personal hygiene. Additionally, we work locally with partners to produce underwear and reusable menstrual pads. We make sure that these products are available to children in schools. We also encourage our partners to operate independently and help communities grow economically. Currently Moja Foundation operates in Tanzania.
-
So far we have been partnering with local people and organisations in the Arusha region of Tanzania. However, we dream of expanding to other countries and continents. Do you have any ideas or connections that could help us? Let us know at info@moja.foundation.
